The Hook House

Hook House up date ... Bud's Cave Transformed
Bud's Cave?  You might ask.  Yes, we affectionately call it that because when Rufus  "Bud" M. Hook, Jr. was a teenager, for a short time he slept in this little garden shed style building.  Later, when he was older, he used it as what we would refer to as a "man cave" to have some quiet time without others; women perhaps?  Our renovation team, headed byu John Motte, has enlarged and transformed it into a stylish, modern studio apartment.  It was always just a place to getaway, but now it is very livable with a small kitchen, bathroom, and living space.
Best of all, it is now occpied and the rent is helping to cover costs for the renovations and later will help us with utilities and other expenses.
     Nice job, John & crew!

A Brief History of the Hook Brothers in Perris

PictureHook Brothers and Oak building circa 1890's
The Perris Valley Historical Museum and Association has acquired the Victorian-era Hook House on West Seventh Street and eventually plans to restore the two-story building, return it to its former grandeur, and open the residence as a museum to the public.  The house is important because it was occupied by several generations of the pioneer Hook family for more than a century.
The residence once belonged to Albert Walker Hook, who with his brother, Joseph, moved to Perris from San Francisco and settled in the City in 1887, where they became prominent business owners. The building to the right was their business building in the 1890's.  It was located at the southern end of today's D Street.
The two-story Hook home was built in the early 1890s.  Also built during this time period was Southern Hotel 1886) (which was restored by private owners), the Santa Fe Depot (1892) (which today houses the Perris Valley Historical Museum), the Bank of Perris building (1918) (which serves as the repository of histori
cal documents), and the the Perris High School building (1910) (which has become the City of Perris City Council building).
